PCI embarked on a multi-city video shoot for the Department of Transportation’s moving fraud prevention program.
PCI Hits the Road to “Protect Your Move”
While the majority of moving companies are conscientious and professional, too many consumers are victimized by unethical and sometimes illegal movers. Offenses include charging far more than the written estimate, stealing household goods, or holding an entire shipment “hostage” for an exorbitant ransom. Senior citizens, professionals, and military families who opt for “self-moves” are frequent targets. The Department of Transportation (DOT)’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) created the “Protect Your Move” program to educate consumers how to choose reputable movers and avoid moving fraud.
PCI has partnered with FMCSA to spread awareness of this program by driving consumers to the “Protect Your Move” website (protectyourmove.gov). This website encourages the reporting of illegal and fraudulent movers, features a searchable database to let consumers research prospective registered movers, and provides links to state consumer protection agencies.
“Protect Your Move” marketing materials include “red flags,” or key indicators of moving fraud. This year’s 30-second video takes the campaign one step further. PCI hit the road to interview real victims of moving fraud, bringing home the reality that this crime can happen to anyone. Shoot locations included Raleigh and Asheville, North Carolina; New York City; Little Rock, Arkansas; and Washington, DC.
